Getting the correct fit with a new pair of ski boots can feel like black magic–only boot wizards with the correct spells can find a boot that fits. Meanwhile,  you’re left with boots that inevitably feel like torture devices. This is especially true if you try on boots alone or without helpful information or background knowledge.

So, to get more happy skiers on the slopes this season with correctly fitting boots, we want to share some do’s and don’ts for getting the correct fit. This article will be brief, but it should possess almost all you need to know for a proper ski boot fit.

Don’t Worry About Brand Loyalty (Yet)

When you are first getting acquainted with ski boots, it can be helpful to try on boots from different manufacturers. Then, with time, you can get a better feel for the nuances of each brand and how they fit your feet.

Do Pay Attention to Mondo Sizing

Typically, when you buy a pair of ski boots, you see multiple sizes on the box that pertain to different geographic regions (and measuring systems). This can be confusing.

Instead, focus on mondo point sizing. Mondo point sizing, or mondo sizing, is essentially the length of a ski boot in centimeters. It’s a fixed numerical size transferable across different geographic regions and ski boot makes and models.

Hypothetically, once you know your mondo size, you can try on different boots without too much experimentation. Then, once you find your preferred brand, you can check specific sizing charts for each boot manufacturer, for example, Rossignol.

How to Find Your Mondo Size

Calculating your mondo size is super straightforward. All you have to do is measure your foot (in centimeters) from the base of your heel to the tip of your big toe. The best way to do this is with an experienced bootfitter. However, you can also do it at home by standing on a piece of paper, drawing a line at your heel and toe, and measuring the space between the lines in centimeters.

Remember, your mondo size only measures length. So consider the volume and width of your feet when trying on ski boots.

Don’t Forget to Consider Your Ski Level (And Boot Flex)

Boot flex is an important characteristic to consider when looking for ski boots. Typically, beginner skiers require softer flexing boots, and advanced skiers require harder flexing boots.

Boot flex also varies by gender and age. For example, an entry-level men’s ski boot will have a slightly harder flex than a similar women’s ski boot. Kid’s ski boots have different flexes as well.

Do Wear Proper Socks

For the most accurate fitting experience, it’s important to wear the same socks you plan on skiing with. In most cases, ski socks are thin or very thin. That’s because thicker socks diminish boot performance. Remember– the boots are responsible for insulating your feet, not your socks.

Do Assume a Ski Position

When you’re trying on new ski boots, it’s helpful to assume a ski position with the boots buckled. Flex your boot by driving your knees forward, shift your weight from side to side, and walk around a little. As you do, pay attention to how your feet function and feel inside the boots.

Do Buy Snug

Ideally, you want your ski boots to fit snugly out of the box. However, you do not want them so snug that they cut off circulation or create prominent hot spots.

As a general gauge for “snugness,” you are looking for slight to moderate pressure on your longest toe when the boot is fully buckled and you are standing upright.  A snug boot will begin to fit better and better as you break the boot in.
